A little trip around Portogruaro (3)

Continuing our walk we saw the Town Hall, that is the symbol of Portogruaro and his central part was built between 1372 and 1380; it is made of bare brickwork , with elegant ghibelline merlons on each side and a double one at the top. A small gable housed the town council’s bell which summoned the assemblies. In 1512, commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building, under the direction of Giovanni Baffo, two lateral wings were added which match perfectly in style with the central part of the building. The town hall underwent three restoration operations during the 19th century. In 1928 six sculptured heads from the 16th century, were added.

The lead on the left-hand corner of the building has been identified with the deity of the river Lemene. The square in front of the town hall was paved in porphyry in 1950.
